Il successo planetario arrivò con la vendita dalla console Atari 2600. Seguì l'Atari 5200, ma nel frattempo qualcosa cominciò ad andare storto. Ci furuono migliaia di cartucce invendute di due giochi deludenti: le conversioni di E.T. e Pac Man, cartucce che poi vennere interrate in una discarica del deserto del New Mexico.
Per cercare di risollevarsi la compagnia produsse nuove console che ebbero un certo successo come l'Atari 7800 e soprattutto l'Atari ST. Nel 1989 l'azienda produsse e mise in commercio una console portatile di nome Atari Lynx, concorrente del Nintendo Game Boy, che poteva vantare uno schermo per la prima volta a colori. Ma alcuni difetti come la batteria che durava poco, l'ingombro elevato e la poca disponibilità nei negozi specializzati ne limitarono le vendite. Con gli anni '90 l'Atari si avviava verso un lento declino, non prima di aver commercializzato l'Atari Jaguar nel 1993, la sua ultima console, che nonostante un buon avvio perse la sfida diretta con la uscente e più performante Playstation 1.
